SAVANNAH + PANTANAL: Park, Nobres and Araras Ecolodges > 5 nights (LS 5.5)
The heartland of Brazil, covering an area equal that of Western Europe (2,000,000 km² / 1,242.7 mi²), is called “CERRADO” and is considered the richest savanna in the world, due to a high diversity of plants and endemism. Most of Brazil’s big rivers’ sources are here. It’s an area of ecological importance and spectacular beauty like the “Chapada dos Guimarães” National Park, only 55 km / 34.17 mi. Northeast Cuiabá. The enormous biodiversity includes something like 837 bird species, 161 mammals, 120 reptiles and over 10,000 vascular plants, of which 44% are endemic.
Day 1 Cuiabá - Chapada dos Guimarães
Pick-up at Cuiabá/Várzea Grande airport or hotel and transfer to Chapada dos Guimarães, at the end of the day. Check-in at the charming Park Eco Lodge. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2 Chapada dos Guimarães
A day of discovery: a wonderful hike at the national park. The wind and rain sculpted intriguing shapes in the sand stones covered with rich vegetation, birds singing and crystal clear waterfalls add to the enjoyment of the trail. The hike ends with a visit to a lovely waterfall and a delicious meal at the perfect setting; a restaurant opening to a canyon and serving the best of the traditional pantaneira cuisine. This is the place to be, when at sunset. It approaches the 850 m / 2,788 ft. high “São Geronimo” Peak in front of the lodge. Dinner and overnight.
Day 3 Chapada dos Guimarães - Nobres - Pantanal
After breakfast departure to Bom Jardim (2hr drive) passing by impressive rock formations. Arrival at Recanto Ecológico Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon) to pick-up equipment for the activities of the day: 1 km trail to Aquário Encantado/Enchanted Acquarium and Salobra River.
Aquário Encantado: one of the sources of Salobra River – floating with the fish (several species and colors) in a 6 m / 19.6 ft. deep pool.
Salobra River: a 500 m / 0.31 mi. snorkeling while the river flow pushes Return to Recanto Ecológico Lagoa Azul for lunch.
After lunch departure to Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge – approximately 3hr drive. Arrival at Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge - late afternoon hike and a spectacular sunset from the top of the 12 m / 39.5 ft. high Mirante da Garça, observation tower. After dinner, a walk enjoying the Southern Hemisphere sky and hear the noises of the night. Overnight at Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge.
Day 4 Pantanal
Full day dedicated to the observation of the flora & fauna at Araras Pantanal Eco Lodge private reservation. After breakfast, a 2 to 3 hour horseback ride through grazing fields, woods and flood plain. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, a hike to a different area to see and learn more on the environment. Overnight.
Day 5 Pantanal
After breakfast explore the lodge’s dirt roads, to Sentinela Camp on the edge of Rio Clarinho (river). Canoeing to a spot of privileged aquatic life with birds and flora; there is the possibility of piranha fishing. A typical Brazilian churrasco / barbecue picnic lunch at the river bank. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 6 Pantanal
Hike at sunrise. Breakfast. Enjoy the lodge surroundings before the photo safari transfer to Cuiabá. Drop-off at the airport or city hotel.
